On the inside, Rangel was a wreck. Hadn't fortune foretold the demise of his challenger 40 years earlier? Rangel, stopped, stunned by the thought that he’d been in office, but a short 40 years. Dossier after dossier landed on his desk, telling him otherwise. The only projects bringing business into the district were the very ones driving residents out. And then there was the elephant in the room, his pending ethics trial. The phone rang, shaking Charlie out of another fit of contemplative worry. Mr. Rangel, it's a Huffington Post blogger. I don't have time to be worrying about no blogger! But the blogger IS a reporter... These episodes were happening more frequently. Charlie was really only worried about one thing...an upstart named Vincent Morgan. He worked on my campaign, of course he'll be on the ballot! How did I let this happen! Startled interns jumped at the booming raspy voice wallowing out of the walls of Charlie's office. Charlie's chief of staff knew his cue and scurried into the room. Vincent Morgan Facebooked another article about the dismal economic outlook for Harlem. As Charlie's aide flashed his smartphone to support his report... A quizzical expression gripped Charlie's face. Charlie liked when people called him 'Your Honor.' He's hosting a Ustream with WeHarlem and a small business development concern. All the information the aide was relaying remained in an unopened file on Rangel's desk. Charlie spent most of his mornings combing through stacks of newspapers. As the aide prattled on about all the things Morgan was doing, Charlie wonder how he would be remembered. The aide knew he had lost Charlie some time ago, but forged on. I could teach that kid a thing or two about small business! There he was, that Vincent Morgan... Text and video shot across the smartphone screen and Charlie missed most of it. He saw himself a Phoenix, rising up from the flames of persecution. And once I win, I'll retire and enjoy my days as an elder statesman. Leave office, head held high. Charlie couldn't do that. With a wave of his hand, Charlie dismissed the aide... It was time for Charlie's novellas on Univision. The Takeover: To Be Continued...
